Message to the Sons of Josiah

¹¹ For thus says the Lord concerning ^(A)Shallum^[a] the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned instead of Josiah his father, ^(B)who went from this place: “He shall not return here anymore,

¹⁵ The sons of Josiah were Johanan the firstborn, the second ^[a]Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, and the fourth ^[b]Shallum.

The Reign and Captivity of Jehoahaz^(A)

36 Then ^(B)the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s place in Jerusalem. ^2 [a]Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. ³ Now the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. ⁴ Then the king of Egypt made ^[b]Jehoahaz’s brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took ^[c]Jehoahaz his brother and carried him off to Egypt.

³⁴ Then ^(A)Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah, and ^(B)changed his name to ^(C)Jehoiakim. And Pharaoh took Jehoahaz ^(D)and went to Egypt, and ^[a]he died there.

²² So Hilkiah and those the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of ^[a]Tokhath, the son of ^[b]Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe. (She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke to her to that effect.

¹² Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war,

^31 (B)Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was ^(C)Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.
