“Inquire among the nations:
    Who has ever heard anything like this?^(A)
A most horrible^(B) thing has been done
    by Virgin^(C) Israel.

³⁰ “A horrible^(A) and shocking thing
    has happened in the land:

¹⁰ I have seen a horrible^(A) thing in Israel:
    There Ephraim is given to prostitution,
    Israel is defiled.^(B)

¹⁴ And among the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen something horrible:^(A)
    They commit adultery and live a lie.^(B)
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,^(C)
    so that not one of them turns from their wickedness.^(D)
They are all like Sodom^(E) to me;
    the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”^(F)

¹⁰ Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus^(A) and look,
    send to Kedar^[a](B) and observe closely;
    see if there has ever been anything like this:
¹¹ Has a nation ever changed its gods?
    (Yet they are not gods^(C) at all.)
But my people have exchanged their glorious^(D) God
    for worthless idols.
¹² Be appalled at this, you heavens,
    and shudder with great horror,”
declares the Lord.
¹³ “My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken^(E) me,
    the spring of living water,^(F)
and have dug their own cisterns,
    broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

⁸ Who has ever heard of such things?
    Who has ever seen^(A) things like this?
Can a country be born in a day^(B)
    or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
    than she gives birth to her children.^(C)

⁴ I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin^(A) Israel, will be rebuilt.^(B)
Again you will take up your timbrels^(C)
    and go out to dance^(D) with the joyful.^(E)

“‘Let my eyes overflow with tears^(A)
    night and day without ceasing;
for the Virgin^(B) Daughter, my people,
    has suffered a grievous wound,
    a crushing blow.^(C)
