¹¹ They have made it a desolation;
    desolate, ^(A)it mourns to me.
The whole land is made desolate,
    ^(B)but no man lays it to heart.

²⁵ So he poured on him the heat of his anger
    and the might of battle;
it set him on fire all around, ^(A)but he did not understand;
    it burned him up, ^(B)but he did not take it to heart.

^10 (A)For the land is full of adulterers;
    ^(B)because of the curse ^(C)the land mourns,
    and ^(D)the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
^(E)Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.

1 ^(A)How lonely sits the city
    that was full of people!
How like ^(B)a widow has she become,
    she who was great among the nations!
She who was ^(C)a princess among the provinces
    has become ^(D)a slave.

^4 (A)How long will the land mourn
    and the grass of every field wither?
^(B)For the evil of those who dwell in it
    ^(C)the beasts and the birds are swept away,
    because they said, “He will not see our latter end.”

⁵ “If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you,
    how will you compete with horses?
And if in a safe land you are so trusting,
    what will you do in ^(D)the thicket of the Jordan?
⁶ For ^(E)even your brothers and the house of your father,
    ^(F)even they have dealt treacherously with you;
    they are in full cry after you;
^(G)do not believe them,
    though they speak friendly words to you.”
