Warning to the Rich

5 Come now, ^(A)you rich, weep and howl for the ^(B)miseries that are coming upon you.

⁹ But ^(A)those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, ^(B)into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that ^(C)plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of ^(D)all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

²³ Thus says the Lord: ^(A)“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,

¹¹ For the sun rises with its scorching heat and ^(A)withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

^24 (A)“But woe to you who are rich, ^(B)for you ^(C)have received your consolation.

²⁵ “Woe to you who are full now, for ^(D)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to ^(E)you who laugh now, ^(F)for you shall mourn and weep.

¹⁶ And he told them a parable, saying, ^(A)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, ¹⁷ and he thought to himself, ^(B)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ ¹⁸ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my ^(C)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up ^(D)for many years; relax, ^(E)eat, drink, be merry.”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, ^(F)‘Fool! ^(G)This night ^(H)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, ^(I)whose will they be?’ ²¹ So is the one ^(J)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
