⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.^(A)

⁸ Discipline yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.^{(A) 9} Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.^(B)

²⁷ and do not make room for the devil.

¹¹ put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, ¹² for our^[a] struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present^[b] darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.^[c](A)

⁶ Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time.

² where for forty days he was tested by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over he was famished.^{(A) 3} The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” ⁴ Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’ ”^(B)

⁵ Then the devil^[a] led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. ⁶ And the devil^[b] said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please.^{(C) 7} If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” ⁸ Jesus answered him, “It is written,

⁹ Then the devil^[c] led him to Jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰ for it is written,

¹¹ and

¹² Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”^{(F) 13} When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.^(G)

³ The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”^{(A) 4} But he answered, “It is written,

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple,^{(C) 6} saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”^(E)

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, ⁹ and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written,

¹¹ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.^(G)

⁹ Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

⁹ The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.^(A)

¹⁰ Then I heard a loud voice in heaven proclaiming,
