⁷ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,^(A) and he will flee from you.

⁸ Be alert and of sober mind.^(A) Your enemy the devil prowls around^(B) like a roaring lion^(C) looking for someone to devour. ⁹ Resist him,^(D) standing firm in the faith,^(E) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.^(F)

²⁷ and do not give the devil a foothold.^(A)

¹¹ Put on the full armor of God,^(A) so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. ¹² For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,^(B) but against the rulers, against the authorities,^(C) against the powers^(D) of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.^(E)

⁶ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.^(A)

² where for forty days^(A) he was tempted^[a] by the devil.^(B) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

³ The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,^(C) tell this stone to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’^[b]”^(D)

⁵ The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.^{(E) 6} And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,^(F) and I can give it to anyone I want to. ⁷ If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

⁸ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’^[c]”^(G)

⁹ The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. ¹⁰ For it is written:

¹² Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’^[e]”^(I)

¹³ When the devil had finished all this tempting,^(J) he left him^(K) until an opportune time.

⁹ Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits^(A) and live!^(B)

⁹ The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent^(A) called the devil,^(B) or Satan,^(C) who leads the whole world astray.^(D) He was hurled to the earth,^(E) and his angels with him.

¹⁰ Then I heard a loud voice in heaven^(F) say:

³ The tempter^(A) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(B) tell these stones to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’^[a]”^(C)

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city^(D) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ⁶ “If you are the Son of God,”^(E) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

⁷ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’^[c]”^(G)

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ⁹ “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!^(H) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’^[d]”^(I)

¹¹ Then the devil left him,^(J) and angels came and attended him.^(K)
