53 Who has believed what we have heard?[a]
And to whom has the arm of the Lord(A) been revealed?(B)
He grew up before him like a young plant(C)
and like a root out of dry ground.
He didn’t have an impressive form
or majesty that we should look at him,
no appearance that we should desire him.(D)
He was despised and rejected by men,(E)
a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.(F)
He was like someone people turned away from;[b]
he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

Yet he himself bore our sicknesses,
and he carried our pains;(G)
but we in turn regarded him stricken,
struck down by God,(H) and afflicted.
But he was pierced because of our rebellion,(I)
crushed because of our iniquities;(J)
punishment(K) for our peace was on him,
and we are healed by his wounds.(L)
We all went astray like sheep;(M)
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him
for[c] the iniquity(N) of us all.(O)

He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter
and like a sheep silent before her shearers,
he did not open his mouth.(P)
He was taken away because of oppression and judgment,
and who considered his fate?[d]
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
he was struck because of my people’s rebellion.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
but he was with a rich man at his death,(Q)
because he had done no violence
and had not spoken deceitfully.(R)

10 Yet the Lord was pleased(S) to crush him severely.[e](T)
When[f] you make him a guilt offering,(U)
he will see his seed, he will prolong his days,
and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.(V)
11 After his anguish,
he will see light[g] and be satisfied.
By his knowledge,
my righteous(W) servant(X) will justify many,(Y)
and he will carry their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him[h] the many as a portion,
and he will receive[i] the mighty as spoil,
because he willingly submitted to death,(Z)
and was counted among the rebels;(AA)
yet he bore the sin of many(AB)
and interceded for the rebels.(AC)

Future Glory for Israel

54 “Rejoice, childless one, who did not give birth;
burst into song and shout,
you who have not been in labor!(AD)
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than the children of the married woman,”(AE)
says the Lord.
“Enlarge the site of your tent,
and let your tent curtains be stretched out;(AF)
do not hold back;
lengthen your ropes,
and drive your pegs deep.
For you will spread out to the right and to the left,(AG)
and your descendants will dispossess nations
and inhabit the desolate cities.

“Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;(AH)
don’t be humiliated, for you will not be disgraced.
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
and you will no longer remember
the disgrace of your widowhood.(AI)
Indeed, your husband is your Maker(AJ)
his name is the Lord of Armies—
and the Holy One of Israel(AK) is your Redeemer;(AL)
he is called the God of the whole earth.
For the Lord has called you,
like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit,(AM)
a wife of one’s youth(AN) when she is rejected,”
says your God.
“I deserted you for a brief moment,(AO)
but I will take you back with abundant compassion.
In a surge of anger
I hid my face(AP) from you for a moment,
but I will have compassion on you
with everlasting love,”(AQ)
says the Lord your Redeemer.
“For this is like the days[j] of Noah to me:
when I swore that the water of Noah
would never flood the earth again,(AR)
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you
or rebuke you.(AS)
10 Though the mountains move
and the hills shake,
my love will not be removed from you
and my covenant of peace(AT) will not be shaken,”
says your compassionate Lord.

11 “Poor Jerusalem, storm-tossed, and not comforted,
I will set your stones in black mortar,[k]
and lay your foundations in lapis lazuli.(AU)
12 I will make your fortifications[l] out of rubies,
your gates out of sparkling stones,
and all your walls out of precious stones.
13 Then all your children will be taught by the Lord,(AV)
their prosperity will be great,
14 and you will be established
on a foundation of righteousness.
You will be far from oppression,
you will certainly not be afraid;
you will be far from terror,
it will certainly not come near you.
15 If anyone attacks you,
it is not from me;
whoever attacks you
will fall before you.
16 Look, I have created the craftsman
who blows on the charcoal fire
and produces a weapon suitable for its task;
and I have created the destroyer to cause havoc.
17 No weapon formed against you will succeed,
and you will refute any accusation[m]
raised against you in court.
This is the heritage of the Lord’s servants,(AW)
and their vindication is from me.”(AX)

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Come to the Lord

55 “Come, everyone who is thirsty,(AY)
come to the water;
and you without silver,
come, buy, and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without silver and without cost!
Why do you spend silver on what is not food,
and your wages on what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and you will enjoy the choicest of foods.[n]
Pay attention and come to me;
listen, so that you will live.
I will make a permanent covenant with you(AZ)
on the basis of the faithful kindnesses of David.[o](BA)
Since I have made him a witness to the peoples,(BB)
a leader and commander for the peoples,(BC)
so you will summon a nation you do not know,(BD)
and nations who do not know you will run to you.(BE)
For the Lord your God,
even the Holy One of Israel,(BF)
has glorified you.”(BG)

Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call to him while he is near.(BH)
Let the wicked one abandon his way
and the sinful one his thoughts;(BI)
let him return to the Lord,
so he may have compassion on him,
and to our God, for he will freely forgive.(BJ)

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
and your ways are not my ways.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.
“For as heaven is higher than earth,(BK)
so my ways are higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven
and do not return there
without saturating the earth
and making it germinate and sprout,
and providing seed to sow
and food to eat,(BL)
11 so my word that comes from my mouth
will not return to me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”(BM)

12 You will indeed go out with joy
and be peacefully guided;
the mountains and the hills will break into singing before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.(BN)
13 Instead of the thornbush, a cypress will come up,
and instead of the brier, a myrtle will come up;(BO)
this will stand as a monument for the Lord,(BP)
an everlasting sign that will not be destroyed.

Blessings for Those Who Fear God

A song of ascents.

How happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways!(A)
You will surely eat
what your hands have worked for.(B)
You will be happy,
and it will go well for you.(C)
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house,
your children, like young olive trees
around your table.(D)
In this very way
the man who fears the Lord
will be blessed.(E)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,
so that you will see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life(F)
and will see your children’s children!
Peace be with Israel.(G)

Resurrection Essential to the Gospel

15 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand(A) and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.(B) For I passed on to you(C) as most important what I also received: that Christ died(D) for our sins according to the Scriptures,(E) that he was buried,(F) that he was raised on the third day(G) according to the Scriptures,(H) and that he appeared to Cephas,(I) then to the Twelve.(J) Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time;(K) most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James,(L) then to all the apostles.(M) Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time,[a](N) he also appeared to me.(O)

For I am the least of the apostles,(P) not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted(Q) the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.(R) 11 Whether, then, it is I or they, so we proclaim and so you have believed.

Resurrection Essential to the Faith

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead,(S) how can some of you say, “There is no resurrection of the dead”?(T) 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is in vain, and so is your faith.[b] 15 Moreover, we are found to be false witnesses(U) about God, because we have testified(V) wrongly about God that he raised up Christ—whom he did not raise up, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ(W) have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.

Christ’s Resurrection Guarantees Ours

20 But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits(X) of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death(Y) came through a man,(Z) the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man.(AA) 22 For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.(AB)

23 But each in his own order:(AC) Christ, the firstfruits; afterward, at his coming, those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end,(AD) when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father,(AE) when he abolishes all rule and all authority and power.(AF) 25 For he must reign(AG) until he puts all his enemies under his feet.(AH) 26 The last enemy to be abolished is death.(AI) 27 For God has put everything under his feet.[c](AJ) Now when it says “everything” is put under him, it is obvious that he who puts everything under him is the exception. 28 When everything is subject to Christ, then the Son(AK) himself will also be subject to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.(AL)

Resurrection Supported by Christian Experience

29 Otherwise what will they do who are being baptized for the dead?[d] If the dead are not raised at all, then why are people baptized for them?[e] 30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I face death every day,(AM) as surely as I may boast about you, brothers and sisters, in Christ Jesus our Lord. 32 If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus(AN) as a mere man, what good did that do me?(AO) If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.[f](AP) 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 Come to your senses[g](AQ) and stop sinning; for some people are ignorant about God. I say this to your shame.(AR)

The Nature of the Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? What kind of body will they have when they come?” 36 You fool! What you sow does not come to life(AS) unless it dies. 37 And as for what you sow—you are not sowing the body that will be, but only a seed, perhaps of wheat or another grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he wants,(AT) and to each of the seeds its own body. 39 Not all flesh(AU) is the same flesh; there is one flesh for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the splendor(AV) of the heavenly bodies is different from that of the earthly ones. 41 There is a splendor of the sun, another of the moon, and another of the stars; in fact, one star differs from another star in splendor. 42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead: Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption;(AW) 43 sown in dishonor,(AX) raised in glory;(AY) sown in weakness, raised in power;(AZ) 44 sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written, The first man Adam became a living being;[h](BA) the last Adam(BB) became a life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, then the spiritual.

47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust;(BC) the second man is[i] from heaven. 48 Like the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; like the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven.(BD) 49 And just as we have borne the image(BE) of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven.(BF)

Victorious Resurrection

50 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: Flesh(BG) and blood(BH) cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.(BI) For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53 For this corruptible body must be clothed(BJ) with incorruptibility,(BK) and this mortal body must be clothed with immortality. 54 When this corruptible body is clothed with incorruptibility, and this mortal body is clothed with immortality, then the saying that is written will take place:

Death has been swallowed up(BL) in victory.[j](BM)
55 Where, death, is your victory?
Where, death, is your sting?[k](BN)

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin(BO) is the law.(BP) 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory(BQ) through our Lord Jesus Christ!

58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work,(BR) because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
