Isaiah 52:13-53:6

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

¹³Behold, ^(A)my servant shall act wisely;^[a]
    he shall be high and lifted up,
    and shall be exalted.
¹⁴As many were astonished at you—
    ^(B)his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
¹⁵so ^(C)shall he sprinkle^[b] many nations.
    ^(D)Kings shall shut their mouths because of him,
^(E)for that which has not been told them they see,
    and that which they have not heard they understand.
53 ^(F)Who has believed what he has heard from us?^[c]
    And to whom has ^(G)the arm of the Lord been revealed?
²For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    ^(H)and like a root out of dry ground;
^(I)he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
³^(J)He was despised and rejected^[d] by men,
    a man of sorrows^[e] and acquainted with^[f] grief;^[g]
and as one from whom men hide their faces^[h]
    he was despised, and ^(K)we esteemed him not.

⁴^(L)Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    ^(M)smitten by God, and afflicted.
⁵^(N)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    ^(O)and with his wounds we are healed.
⁶^(P)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
^(Q)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

Jesus, Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and ^(A)sin which clings so closely, and ^(B)let us run ^(C)with endurance the race that is ^(D)set before us, ²looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, ^(E)who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising ^(F)the shame, and ^(G)is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Do Not Grow Weary

³^(H)Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or ^(I)fainthearted.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

⁵⁷^(A)Then ^(B)those who had seized Jesus led him to ^(C)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. ⁵⁸And ^(D)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as ^(E)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with ^(F)the guards to see the end. ⁵⁹Now the chief priests and the whole council^[a] ^(G)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, ⁶⁰but they found none, ^(H)though many false witnesses came forward. At last ^(I)two came forward ⁶¹and said, “This man said, ^(J)‘I am able to ^(K)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” ⁶²And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”^[b] ⁶³^(L)But Jesus remained silent. ^(M)And the high priest said to him, ^(N)“I adjure you by ^(O)the living God, ^(P)tell us if you are ^(Q)the Christ, ^(R)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴Jesus said to him, ^(S)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on ^(T)you will see the Son of Man ^(U)seated at the right hand of Power and ^(V)coming on the clouds of heaven.” ⁶⁵Then the high priest ^(W)tore his robes and said, ^(X)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. ⁶⁶What is your judgment?” They answered, ^(Y)“He deserves death.”
