An Oracle Concerning Philistia

28 In the (A)year that King Ahaz died this [a](B)oracle came:

29 “Do not be glad, O (C)Philistia, all of you,
Because the rod that (D)struck you is broken;
For from the serpent’s root a (E)viper will come out,
And its fruit will be a (F)flying fiery serpent.
30 [b]And the foremost (G)of the poor will eat,
And the needy will lie down in security;
I will put to death your root with (H)famine,
And it will kill off your remnant.
31 Wail, O (I)gate; cry, O city;
[c]Melt away, O (J)Philistia, all of you;
For smoke comes from the (K)north,
And (L)there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 How then will one answer the (M)messengers of the nation?
That (N)Yahweh has founded Zion,
And (O)the afflicted of His people will take refuge in it.”

Judgment on Philistia

28 In the (A)year that King Ahaz died, this (B)pronouncement came:

29 “Do not rejoice, (C)Philistia, all of you,
Because the rod that (D)struck you is broken;
For from the serpent’s root a (E)viper will come out,
And its fruit will be a (F)winged serpent.
30 [a]Those who are most (G)helpless will eat,
And the poor will lie down in security;
I will kill your root with (H)famine,
And it will kill your survivors.
31 Wail, you (I)gate; cry, you city;
[b]Melt away, (J)Philistia, all of you!
For smoke comes from the (K)north,
And (L)there is no straggler in his ranks.
32 What answer will one give the (M)messengers of the nation?
That (N)the Lord has founded Zion,
And (O)the poor of His people will take refuge in it.”
