³ He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,^(A) and familiar with pain.^(B)
Like one from whom people hide^(C) their faces
    he was despised,^(D) and we held him in low esteem.

⁴ Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,^(E)
yet we considered him punished by God,^(F)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.^(G)

⁶ But I am a worm^(A) and not a man,
    scorned by everyone,^(B) despised^(C) by the people.
⁷ All who see me mock me;^(D)
    they hurl insults,^(E) shaking their heads.^(F)
8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
    “let the Lord rescue him.^(G)
Let him deliver him,^(H)
    since he delights^(I) in him.”

¹⁰ When I weep and fast,^(A)
    I must endure scorn;
¹¹ when I put on sackcloth,^(B)
    people make sport of me.
¹² Those who sit at the gate^(C) mock me,
    and I am the song of the drunkards.^(D)

¹⁹ You know how I am scorned,^(A) disgraced and shamed;
    all my enemies are before you.
²⁰ Scorn has broken my heart
    and has left me helpless;
I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
    for comforters,^(B) but I found none.^(C)

⁶ I offered my back to those who beat^(A) me,
    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;^(B)
I did not hide my face
    from mocking and spitting.^(C)

³ “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(A)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.^(B)
5 Blessed are the meek,
    for they will inherit the earth.^(C)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.^(D)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
    for they will be shown mercy.^(E)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,^(F)
    for they will see God.^(G)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,^(H)
    for they will be called children of God.^(I)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,^(J)
    for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.^(K)
