⁵ You have fed them with the bread of tears;^(A)
    you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.^(B)

¹¹ “The days are coming,”^(A) declares the Sovereign Lord,
    “when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
    but a famine^(B) of hearing the words of the Lord.^(C)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
    and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
    but they will not find it.^(D)

⁹ We are given no signs from God;^(A)
    no prophets^(B) are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.

⁹ For I eat ashes^(A) as my food
    and mingle my drink with tears^(B)

⁵ For his anger^(A) lasts only a moment,^(B)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;^(C)
weeping^(D) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.^(E)
