¹⁹ The earth is broken up,^(A)
    the earth is split asunder,^(B)
    the earth is violently shaken.

²³ I looked at the earth,
    and it was formless and empty;^(A)
and at the heavens,
    and their light^(B) was gone.
²⁴ I looked at the mountains,
    and they were quaking;^(C)
    all the hills were swaying.
²⁵ I looked, and there were no people;
    every bird in the sky had flown away.^(D)
26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;^(E)
    all its towns lay in ruins^(F)
    before the Lord, before his fierce anger.^(G)

“The whole land will be ruined,^(H)
    though I will not destroy^(I) it completely.
²⁸ Therefore the earth will mourn^(J)
    and the heavens above grow dark,^(K)
because I have spoken and will not relent,^(L)
    I have decided and will not turn back.^(M)”

⁵ My sword^(E) has drunk its fill in the heavens;
    see, it descends in judgment on Edom,^(F)
    the people I have totally destroyed.^(G)
6 The sword^(H) of the Lord is bathed in blood,
    it is covered with fat—
the blood of lambs and goats,
    fat from the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice^(I) in Bozrah^(J)
    and a great slaughter^(K) in the land of Edom.
⁷ And the wild oxen^(L) will fall with them,
    the bull calves and the great bulls.^(M)
Their land will be drenched with blood,^(N)
    and the dust will be soaked with fat.

⁸ For the Lord has a day^(O) of vengeance,^(P)
    a year of retribution,^(Q) to uphold Zion’s cause.
⁹ Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
    her dust into burning sulfur;^(R)
    her land will become blazing pitch!
¹⁰ It will not be quenched^(S) night or day;
    its smoke will rise forever.^(T)
From generation to generation^(U) it will lie desolate;^(V)
    no one will ever pass through it again.

⁴ The earth dries up^(J) and withers,^(K)
    the world languishes and withers,
    the heavens^(L) languish with the earth.^(M)
5 The earth is defiled^(N) by its people;
    they have disobeyed^(O) the laws,
violated the statutes
    and broken the everlasting covenant.^(P)

⁶ He stood, and shook the earth;
    he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled^(A)
    and the age-old hills^(B) collapsed^(C)—
    but he marches on forever.^(D)
