²⁴ “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies^(A) of those who rebelled^(B) against me; the worms^(C) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,^(D) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

Judgment and Covenant Renewal

4 ^[a]“Surely the day is coming;^(A) it will burn like a furnace.^(B) All the arrogant^(C) and every evildoer will be stubble,^(D) and the day that is coming will set them on fire,^(E)” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch^(F) will be left to them.

¹⁰ And the devil, who deceived them,^(A) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,^(B) where the beast^(C) and the false prophet^(D) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.^(E)

²⁰ But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet^(A) who had performed the signs^(B) on its behalf.^(C) With these signs he had deluded^(D) those who had received the mark of the beast^(E) and worshiped its image.^(F) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake^(G) of burning sulfur.^(H)

¹⁰ they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,^(A) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.^(B) They will be tormented with burning sulfur^(C) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. ¹¹ And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.^(D) There will be no rest day or night^(E) for those who worship the beast and its image,^(F) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”^(G)

¹⁴ The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,^(A) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.^(B)

¹⁵ Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,^(C) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.^{(D) 16} They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us^(E) and hide us^[a] from the face of him who sits on the throne^(F) and from the wrath of the Lamb! ¹⁷ For the great day^(G) of their^[b] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”^(H)

⁴³ If your hand causes you to stumble,^(A) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,^(B) where the fire never goes out.^{(C) [44] [a] 45} And if your foot causes you to stumble,^(D) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.^{(E) [46] [b] 47} And if your eye causes you to stumble,^(F) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,^{(G) 48} where

⁴⁹ Everyone will be salted^(I) with fire.

¹⁰ The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.^(A)
