15 For this is what the (A)high and exalted One
Who [a](B)lives forever, whose name is Holy, says:
“I (C)dwell in a high and holy place,
And also with the (D)contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to (E)revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 For I will (F)not contend forever,
(G)Nor will I always be angry;
For the spirit would grow faint before Me,
And the (H)breath of those whom I have made.
17 Because of the wrongful act of his (I)unjust gain I was angry and struck him;
I hid My face and was angry,
And he went on (J)turning away, in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, but I will (K)heal him;
I will (L)lead him and (M)restore comfort to him and to his mourners,
19 Creating the [b](N)praise of the lips.
(O)Peace, peace to him who is (P)far away and to him who is near,”
Says the Lord, “and I will heal him.”
20 But the (Q)wicked are like the tossing sea,
For it cannot be quiet,
And its waters toss up refuse and mud.
21 (R)There is no peace,” says (S)my God, “for the wicked.”

Observances of Fasts

58 (T)Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (U)wrongdoing,
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they (V)seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
As a nation that has done (W)righteousness
And (X)has not forsaken the ordinance of their God.
They ask Me for just decisions,
They delight (Y)in the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (Z)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not [c]notice?’
Behold, on the (AA)day of your fast you find your desire,
And oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and (AB)strife, and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you have done today to (AC)make your voice heard on high!
Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it for bowing [d]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (AD)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (AE)acceptable day to the Lord?
Is this not the fast that I choose:
To (AF)release the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the ropes of the yoke,
And to (AG)let the oppressed go free,
And (AH)break every yoke?
Is it not to (AI)break your bread [e]with the hungry
And (AJ)bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the (AK)naked, to cover him;
And not to (AL)hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your (AM)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (AN)recovery will spring up quickly;
And your (AO)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the (AP)Lord will be your rear guard.
Then you will (AQ)call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry for help, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (AR)remove the yoke from your midst,
The [f](AS)pointing of the finger and (AT)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you (AU)offer yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the [g]need of the afflicted,
Then your (AV)light will rise in darkness,
And your gloom will become like midday.
11 And the (AW)Lord will continually guide you,
And (AX)satisfy your [h]desire in scorched places,
And (AY)give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a (AZ)watered garden,
And like a (BA)spring of water whose waters do not [i]fail.
12 Those from among you will (BB)rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will (BC)raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the (BD)breach,
The restorer of the [j]streets in which to dwell.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If, because of the Sabbath, you (BE)restrain your foot
From doing as you wish on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a (BF)pleasure, and the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your (BG)own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And (BH)speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take (BI)delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride (BJ)on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the (BK)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Separation from God

59 Behold, (BL)the Lords hand is not so short
That it cannot save;
(BM)Nor is His ear so dull
That it cannot hear.
But your (BN)wrongdoings have caused a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His [k]face from you so that He does (BO)not hear.
For your (BP)hands are defiled with blood,
And your fingers with wrongdoing;
Your lips have spoken (BQ)deceit,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
(BR)No one sues righteously and (BS)no one pleads [l]honestly.
They (BT)trust in confusion and speak lies;
They (BU)conceive trouble and give birth to disaster.
They hatch vipers’ eggs and (BV)weave the spider’s web;
The one who eats of their eggs dies,
And from what is crushed, a snake breaks out.
Their webs will not become clothing,
Nor will they (BW)cover themselves with their works;
Their (BX)works are works of wrongdoing,
And an (BY)act of violence is in their [m]hands.
(BZ)Their feet run to evil,
And they hurry to shed innocent blood;
(CA)Their thoughts are thoughts of wrongdoing,
Devastation and destruction are in their paths.
They do not know the (CB)way of peace,
And there is (CC)no justice in their tracks;
They have made their paths crooked,
(CD)Whoever walks on [n]them does not know peace.

A Confession of Wickedness

Therefore (CE)justice is far from us,
And righteousness does not reach us;
We (CF)hope for light, but there is darkness,
For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We (CG)grope for the wall like people who are blind,
We grope like those who have no eyes.
We (CH)stumble at midday as in the twilight;
Among those who are healthy we are (CI)like the dead.
11 All of us growl like bears,
And (CJ)moan sadly like doves;
We hope for (CK)justice, but there is none;
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (CL)wrongful acts have multiplied before You,
And our (CM)sins have testified against us;
For our wrongful acts are with us,
And [o]we know our wrongdoings:
13 [p]Offending and (CN)denying the Lord,
And turning away from our God,
Speaking (CO)oppression and revolt,
Conceiving and (CP)uttering lying words from the heart.
14 (CQ)Justice is turned back,
And (CR)righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
And one who turns aside from evil (CS)makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was [q]displeasing in His sight (CT)that there was no justice.
16 And He saw that there was (CU)no one,
And was amazed that there was not one to intercede;
Then His (CV)own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on (CW)righteousness like a breastplate,
And a (CX)helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on (CY)garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with (CZ)zeal as a cloak.
18 (DA)According to their deeds, [r]so will He repay:
Wrath to His adversaries, [s]retribution to His enemies;
To the coastlands He will [t]deal [u]retribution.
19 So they will fear the name of the Lord from the (DB)west
And His glory from the (DC)rising of the sun,
For He will (DD)come like a [v]rushing stream
Which the wind of the Lord drives.
20 “A (DE)Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those in Jacob who (DF)turn from wrongdoing,” declares the Lord.

21 “As for Me, this is My (DG)covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My (DH)Spirit who is upon you, and My (DI)words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your [w]offspring, nor from the mouth of your [x]offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from now and forever.”

Thanksgiving

(A)Paul and (B)Timothy, (C)bond-servants of (D)Christ Jesus,

To (E)all the [a](F)saints in Christ Jesus who are in (G)Philippi, [b]including the (H)overseers and (I)deacons: (J)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

(K)I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in (L)my every prayer for you all, in view of your [c](M)participation in the (N)gospel (O)from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work [d]among you will complete it [e]by (P)the day of Christ Jesus. [f]For (Q)it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I (R)have you in my heart, since both in my [g](S)imprisonment and in the (T)defense and confirmation of the (U)gospel, you all are [h]partakers of grace with me. For (V)God is my witness, how I long for you all with the [i]affection of (W)Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that (X)your love may overflow still more and more in (Y)real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may [j](Z)discover the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and blameless for (AA)the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the (AB)fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.

The Gospel Is Preached

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my circumstances (AC)have turned out for the greater progress of the (AD)gospel, 13 so that my [k](AE)imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the [l]praetorian guard and to (AF)everyone else, 14 and that most of the brothers and sisters, [m]trusting in the Lord because of my [n](AG)imprisonment, have (AH)far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 15 (AI)Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even [o]from envy and strife, but some also [p]from goodwill; 16 the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the (AJ)gospel; 17 the former proclaim Christ (AK)out of selfish ambition [q]rather than from pure motives, thinking that they are causing me distress in my [r](AL)imprisonment. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.

But not only that, I also will rejoice, 19 for I know that this will turn out for my [s]deliverance (AM)through your [t]prayers and the provision of (AN)the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my (AO)eager expectation and (AP)hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with (AQ)all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be (AR)exalted in my body, (AS)whether by life or by death.

To Live Is Christ

21 For to me, (AT)to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 [u]But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean (AU)fruitful labor for me; and I do not know [v]which to choose. 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the (AV)desire to depart and (AW)be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sakes. 25 (AX)Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy [w]in the faith, 26 so that your (AY)pride in Christ Jesus may be abundant because of me by my coming to you again.

Prayer of an Old Man for Rescue.

71 (A)In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be put to shame.
(B)In Your righteousness rescue me and save me;
(C)Extend Your ear to me and help me.
(D)Be to me a rock of (E)dwelling to which I may continually come;
You have given the (F)commandment to save me,
For You are (G)my rock and my fortress.
(H)Save me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
From the [a]grasp of the wrongdoer and the ruthless,
For You are my (I)hope;
Lord [b]God, You are my (J)confidence from my youth.
I have (K)leaned on you since my birth;
You are He who (L)took me from my mother’s womb;
My (M)praise is continually [c]of You.

I have become a (N)marvel to many,
For You are (O)my strong refuge.
My (P)mouth is filled with Your praise
And with (Q)Your glory all day long.
Do not cast me away at the (R)time of my old age;
Do not abandon me when my strength fails.
10 For my enemies have spoken [d]against me;
And those who (S)watch for my [e]life (T)have consulted together,
11 Saying, “(U)God has abandoned him;
Pursue and seize him, for there is (V)no one to save him.”

12 God, (W)do not be far from me;
My God, (X)hurry to my aid!
13 May those who are enemies of my soul be (Y)put to shame and consumed;
May they be (Z)covered with disgrace and dishonor, who (AA)seek [f]to injure me.
14 But as for me, I will (AB)wait continually,
And will [g](AC)praise You yet more and more.
15 My (AD)mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And of (AE)Your salvation all day long;
For I (AF)do not know the art of writing.
16 I will come (AG)with the mighty deeds of the Lord [h]God;
I will (AH)make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.

17 God, You (AI)have taught me from my youth,
And I still (AJ)declare Your wondrous deeds.
18 And even when I am (AK)old and gray, God, do not abandon me,
Until I (AL)declare Your [i]strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.
19 [j]For Your (AM)righteousness, God, reaches to the [k]heavens,
You who have (AN)done great things;
God, (AO)who is like You?
20 You who have (AP)shown [l]me many troubles and distresses
Will (AQ)revive [m]me again,
And will bring [n]me up again (AR)from the depths of the earth.
21 May You increase my (AS)greatness
And turn to (AT)comfort me.

22 I will also praise You with [o](AU)a harp,
And Your [p]truth, my God;
I will sing praises to You with the (AV)lyre,
(AW)Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will (AX)shout for joy when I sing praises to You;
And my (AY)soul, which You have redeemed.
24 My (AZ)tongue also will tell of Your righteousness all day long;
For they are (BA)put to shame, for they are humiliated who seek [q]my harm.
