Hosea 7-10

Ephraim’s Wrongdoing
7 When I (A)would heal Israel,
The wrongdoing of Ephraim is uncovered,
And the evil deeds of Samaria,
For they practice (B)deception;
The thief enters,
A band of (C)robbers attack outside,
2 And they do not [a]consider in their hearts
That I (D)remember all their wickedness.
Now their (E)deeds surround them;
They are before My face.
3 (F)With their wickedness they make the (G)king happy,
And the officials with their (H)lies.
4 They are (I)all adulterers,
Like an oven heated by the baker,
Who stops [b]stoking the fire
From the time the dough is kneaded until it is leavened.
5 On the [c]day of our king, the officials (J)became sick with the heat of wine;
He stretched out his hand with [d](K)scoffers,
6 For their hearts are like an (L)oven
As they approach their [e]plotting;
Their [f]anger [g]smolders all night,
In the morning it burns like flaming fire.
7 All of them are hot like an oven,
And they consume their (M)rulers;
All their kings have fallen.
(N)None of them calls on Me.
8 Ephraim is himself (O)thrown about with the [h]nations;
Ephraim has become a round loaf not turned over.
9 (P)Strangers devour his strength,
Yet he (Q)does not know it;
Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 Though the (R)pride of Israel testifies against him,
Yet (S)they have not returned to the Lord their God,
Nor have they sought Him, despite all this.
11 So (T)Ephraim has become like a gullible dove, (U)without [i]sense;
They call to (V)Egypt, they go to (W)Assyria.
12 When they go, I will (X)spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.
I will (Y)discipline them in accordance with the [j]proclamation to their assembly.
13 (Z)Woe to them, for they have (AA)strayed from Me!
Destruction is theirs, for they have rebelled against Me!
I (AB)would redeem them, but they have spoken lies against Me.
14 And (AC)they do not cry to Me from their heart
When they wail on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine they [k](AD)assemble themselves,
They (AE)turn against Me.
15 Although I trained and strengthened their arms,
Yet they (AF)devise evil against Me.
16 They turn, but not [l]upward,
They are like a (AG)loose bow;
Their officials will fall by the sword
Because of the [m](AH)insolence of their tongue.
This will be their (AI)derision in the land of Egypt.
Israel Reaps the Whirlwind
8 (AJ)Put the trumpet to your [n]lips!
(AK)Like an eagle the enemy comes (AL)against the house of the Lord,
Because they have (AM)violated My covenant
And rebelled against My (AN)Law.
2 (AO)They cry out to Me,
“My God, (AP)we of Israel know You!”
3 Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
4 (AQ)They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed officials, but I did not know it.
With their (AR)silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
So that [o]they will be eliminated.
5 [p]He has rejected your (AS)calf, Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of (AT)innocence?
6 For from Israel comes even this!
A (AU)craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Assuredly, the calf of Samaria will be broken to [q]pieces.
7 For (AV)they sow wind
And they harvest a (AW)storm.
The standing grain has no [r]kernels;
It yields (AX)no [s]grain.
If it were to yield, strangers would swallow it.
8 Israel has been (AY)swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a (AZ)vessel in which no one delights.
9 For they have gone up to (BA)Assyria,
Like (BB)a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has (BC)paid fees for [t]lovers.
10 Even though they [u]pay for allies among the nations,
I will (BD)gather them up now;
And they will begin (BE)to diminish
Because of the burden of the (BF)king of officials.
11 Since Ephraim has (BG)multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12 Though (BH)I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My (BI)Law,
They are regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for My (BJ)sacrificial gifts,
They (BK)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But the Lord has taken no delight in them.
Now He will (BL)remember their guilt,
And (BM)punish them for their sins;
They will return to (BN)Egypt.
14 For Israel has (BO)forgotten his Maker and (BP)built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a (BQ)fire on its cities, and it will consume its palatial buildings.
Ephraim Punished
9 (BR)Do not rejoice, Israel, [v]with jubilation like the [w]nations!
For you have (BS)been unfaithful, [x]abandoning your God.
You have loved the earnings of unfaithfulness on [y]every threshing floor.
2 Threshing floor and wine press will (BT)not feed them,
And the new wine will fail [z]them.
3 They will not remain in (BU)the Lord’s land,
But Ephraim will return to (BV)Egypt,
And in (BW)Assyria they will eat (BX)unclean food.
4 They will not pour out drink offerings of (BY)wine to the Lord,
(BZ)Nor will [aa]their sacrifices please Him.
Their bread will be to them like [ab]mourners’ bread;
All who eat it will be (CA)defiled,
Because their bread will be for [ac]themselves alone;
It will not enter the house of the Lord.
5 (CB)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival
And on the day of the (CC)feast of the Lord?
6 For behold, they will be gone because of destruction;
Egypt will gather them together, (CD)Memphis will bury them.
Weeds will take possession of their treasures of silver;
(CE)Thorns will be in their tents.
7 The days of (CF)punishment have come,
The days of (CG)retribution have come;
[ad]Let Israel know this!
The prophet is a (CH)fool,
The [ae]inspired person is (CI)insane,
Because of the grossness of your (CJ)wrongdoing,
And because your [af]hostility is so great.
8 Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;
Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,
And there is only [ag]hostility in the house of his God.
9 They are (CK)deeply depraved
As in the days of (CL)Gibeah;
He will (CM)remember their guilt,
He will punish their sins.
10 I found Israel like (CN)grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your forefathers as the (CO)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season.
But they came to (CP)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to [ah](CQ)shame,
And they became as (CR)detestable as that which they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their (CS)glory will fly away like a bird—
No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception!
12 Though they bring up their children,
Yet I will bereave them of their children [ai]until not a person is left.
Yes, (CT)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,
Is planted in a pasture like (CU)Tyre;
But Ephraim is going to bring out his children for slaughter.
14 Give to them, Lord—what will You give?
Give them a (CV)miscarrying womb and dried-up breasts.
15 All their evil is at (CW)Gilgal;
Indeed, I came to hate them there!
Because of the (CX)wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of My house!
I will no longer love them;
All their leaders are (CY)rebels.
16 (CZ)Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up,
They will produce (DA)no fruit.
Even though they give birth to children,
I will put to death the (DB)precious ones of their womb.
17 My God will reject them
Because they have (DC)not listened to Him;
And they will be (DD)wanderers among the nations.
Retribution for Israel’s Sin
10 Israel is a luxuriant (DE)vine;
He produces fruit for himself.
The more his fruit,
The more altars he (DF)made;
The [aj]richer his land,
The better [ak]he made the (DG)memorial stones.
2 Their heart is [al](DH)deceitful;
Now they must suffer for their (DI)guilt.
[am]The Lord will (DJ)break down their altars
And destroy their memorial stones.
3 Certainly now they will say, “We have (DK)no king,
For we do not revere the Lord.
As for the king, what can he do for us?”
4 They speak mere words,
[an]With (DL)worthless oaths they make covenants;
And (DM)judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the [ao](DN)calf of (DO)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (DP)idolatrous priests [ap]will cry out over it,
Over its (DQ)glory, since it has left it.
6 The thing itself will be brought to (DR)Assyria
As a gift of tribute to [aq](DS)King Jareb;
Ephraim will [ar]be (DT)seized with shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (DU)own plan.
7 Samaria will be (DV)destroyed with her king,
Like a twig on the surface of the water.
8 Also the (DW)high places of Aven, the (DX)sin of Israel, will be destroyed;
(DY)Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars;
Then they will (DZ)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
9 Since the days of Gibeah you have sinned, Israel;
There they stand!
Will the battle against the sons of injustice not overtake them in Gibeah?
10 When it is My (EA)desire, I will [as](EB)discipline them;
And (EC)the peoples will be gathered against them
When they are bound for their double guilt.
11 Ephraim is a trained (ED)heifer that loves to thresh,
[at]And I (EE)passed over her lovely neck;
I will harness Ephraim,
Judah will plow, Jacob will [au]harrow for himself.
12 (EF)Sow for yourselves, with a view to righteousness;
Harvest in accordance with [av]kindness.
(EG)Break up your uncultivated ground,
For it is time to (EH)seek the Lord
Until He (EI)comes and (EJ)rains righteousness on you.
13 You have (EK)plowed wickedness, you have harvested injustice,
You have eaten the fruit of (EL)lies.
Because you have trusted in your way, in your (EM)many warriors,
14 An uproar will arise among your people,
And all your (EN)fortresses will be destroyed,
As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
When (EO)mothers were [aw]slaughtered with their children.
15 So it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness.
At dawn the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

Matthew 18
New American Standard Bible
Rank in the Kingdom
18 (A)At that [a]time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “(B)Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him among them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you [b]change and (C)become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 So whoever will humble himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever receives one such child in My name, receives Me; 6 but (D)whoever (E)causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to [c]sin, it is better for him that a [d]heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Stumbling Blocks
7 “Woe to the world because of its [e]stumbling blocks! For (F)it is inevitable that [f]stumbling blocks come; but woe to the person through whom the [g]stumbling block comes!
8 “And (G)if your hand or your foot is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; it is better for you to enter life maimed or without a foot, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And (H)if your eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the [h](I)fiery hell.
10 “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones; for I say to you that (J)their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.[i]
Ninety-nine Plus One
12 “What do you think? (K)If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains, and go and search for the one that is lost? 13 And if it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that have not gone astray. 14 So it is not the will [j]of your Father who is in heaven for one of these little ones to perish.
Discipline and Prayer
15 “Now (L)if your brother sins[k], go and [l]show him his fault [m]in private; if he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that (M)on the [n]testimony of two or three witnesses every [o]matter may be confirmed. 17 And if he refuses to listen to them, (N)tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, (O)he is to be to you as [p]a Gentile and [q]a tax collector. 18 Truly I say to you, (P)whatever you [r]bind on earth [s]shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you [t]loose on earth [u]shall have been loosed in heaven.
19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, (Q)it shall be done for them [v]by My Father who is in heaven. 20 For where two or three have gathered together in My name, (R)I am there in their midst.”
Forgiveness
21 Then Peter came up and said to Him, “Lord, (S)how many times shall my brother sin against me and I still forgive him? Up to (T)seven times?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to [w](U)seventy-seven times.
23 “For this reason (V)the kingdom of heaven [x]is like a king who wanted to (W)settle accounts with his slaves. 24 And when he had begun to settle them, one who owed him [y]ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25 But since he [z](X)did not have the means to repay, his master commanded that he (Y)be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment be made. 26 So the slave fell to the ground and (Z)prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’ 27 And the master of that slave felt compassion, and he released him and (AA)forgave him the [aa]debt. 28 But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred [ab]denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe!’ 29 So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ 30 But he was unwilling, [ac]and went and threw him in prison until he would pay back what was owed. 31 So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their master all that had happened. 32 Then summoning him, his master *said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 (AB)Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ 34 And his master, moved with anger, handed him over to the [ad]torturers until he would repay all that was owed him. 35 (AC)My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your [ae]heart.”
