Hosea 1:1 - Joel 3 English Standard Version (ESV)
1 The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
Hosea's Wife and Children
2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” 3 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.
4 And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”
6 She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her name No Mercy,[a] for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. 7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”
10 [d] Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children[e] of the living God.” 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished
2 “Plead with your mother, plead—
The Lord's Mercy on Israel
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
16 “And in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18 And I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish[k] the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in safety. 19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord.
21 “And in that day I will answer, declares the Lord,
Hosea Redeems His Wife
3 And the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” 2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech[o] of barley. 3 And I said to her, “You must dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” 4 For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. 5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.
The Lord Accuses Israel
4 Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
4 Yet let no one contend,
7 The more they increased,
15 Though you play the whore, O Israel,
17 Ephraim is joined to idols;
Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah
5 Hear this, O priests!
3 I know Ephraim,
5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[t]
8 Blow the horn in Gibeah,
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
15 I will return again to my place,
Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant
6 “Come, let us return to the Lord;
4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?
7 But like Adam they transgressed the covenant;
11 For you also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed.
When I restore the fortunes of my people,
8 Ephraim mixes himself with the peoples;
11 Ephraim is like a dove,
14 They do not cry to me from the heart,
Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind
8 Set the trumpet to your lips!
4 They made kings, but not through me.
7 For they sow the wind,
11 Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning,
The Lord Will Punish Israel
9 Rejoice not, O Israel!
4 They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,
5 What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
7 The days of punishment have come;
10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
15 Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal;
16 Ephraim is stricken;
10 Israel is a luxuriant vine
3 For now they will say:
7 Samaria's king shall perish
9 From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
11 Ephraim was a trained calf
13 You have plowed iniquity;
The Lord's Love for Israel
11 When Israel was a child, I loved him,
3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk;
5 They shall not[am] return to the land of Egypt,
8 How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
10 They shall go after the Lord;
The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah
2 The Lord has an indictment against Judah
7 A merchant, in whose hands are false balances,
10 I spoke to the prophets;
The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel
13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
4 But I am the Lord your God
9 He destroys[ar] you, O Israel,
12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
14 I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
15 Though he may flourish among his brothers,
A Plea to Return to the Lord
14 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
4 I will heal their apostasy;
8 O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
1 The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel:
An Invasion of Locusts
2 Hear this, you elders;
4 What the cutting locust left,
5 Awake, you drunkards, and weep,
8 Lament like a virgin[ax] wearing sackcloth
11 Be ashamed,[ay] O tillers of the soil;
A Call to Repentance
13 Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests;
14 Consecrate a fast;
15 Alas for the day!
17 The seed shrivels under the clods;[ba]
19 To you, O Lord, I call.
The Day of the Lord
2 Blow a trumpet in Zion;
3 Fire devours before them,
4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
6 Before them peoples are in anguish;
10 The earth quakes before them;
Return to the Lord
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord,
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion;
17 Between the vestibule and the altar
The Lord Had Pity
18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land
20 “I will remove the northerner far from you,
21 “Fear not, O land;
23 “Be glad, O children of Zion,
24 “The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
26 “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit
28 [bg] “And it shall come to pass afterward,
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
The Lord Judges the Nations
3 [bh] “For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
