¹⁴ They do not cry out to me from their hearts^(A)
    but wail on their beds.
They slash themselves,^[a] appealing to their gods
    for grain and new wine,^(B)
    but they turn away from me.^(C)

⁹ “People cry out^(A) under a load of oppression;^(B)
    they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful.^(C)
10 But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,^(D)
    who gives songs^(E) in the night,^(F)

⁸ They lie down beside every altar
    on garments taken in pledge.^(A)
In the house of their god
    they drink wine^(B) taken as fines.^(C)

³⁴ Whenever God slew them, they would seek^(A) him;
    they eagerly turned to him again.
³⁵ They remembered that God was their Rock,^(B)
    that God Most High was their Redeemer.^(C)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,^(D)
    lying to him with their tongues;
³⁷ their hearts were not loyal^(E) to him,
    they were not faithful to his covenant.

¹¹ If a liar and deceiver^(A) comes and says,
    ‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’^(B)
    that would be just the prophet for this people!^(C)
