³ It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
    taking them by the arms;^(A)
but they did not realize
    it was I who healed^(B) them.

7 ¹ whenever I would heal Israel,
the sins of Ephraim are exposed
    and the crimes of Samaria revealed.^(A)
They practice deceit,^(B)
    thieves break into houses,^(C)
    bandits rob in the streets;^(D)

⁹ In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel^(A) of his presence^(B) saved them.^[a]
In his love and mercy he redeemed^(C) them;
    he lifted them up and carried^(D) them
    all the days of old.^(E)
