The Problem of Immaturity

11 We have a great deal to say about this, and it’s difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. 12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.(A) 13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.(B)

Warning against Regression

Therefore, leaving the elementary message about the Messiah, let us go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, faith in God,(C) teaching about ritual washings,[a] laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.(D) And we will do this if God permits.

For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, became companions with the Holy Spirit,(E) tasted God’s good word and the powers of the coming age, and who have fallen away, because,[b] to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding Him up to contempt.(F)

Warning Against Falling Away(A)

11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths(B) of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!(C) 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant,(D) is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature,(E) who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.(F)

Therefore let us move beyond(G) the elementary teachings(H) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a](I) and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites,[b](J) the laying on of hands,(K) the resurrection of the dead,(L) and eternal judgment. And God permitting,(M) we will do so.

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,(N) who have tasted the heavenly gift,(O) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,(P) who have tasted the goodness(Q) of the word of God(R) and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen[c] away, to be brought back to repentance.(S) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God(T) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
