38 Now (A)the[a] just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those (B)who draw back to [b]perdition, but of those who (C)believe to the saving of the soul.

By Faith We Understand

11 Now faith is the [c]substance of things hoped for, the [d]evidence (D)of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith we understand that (E)the [e]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Faith at the Dawn of History(F)

By faith (G)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still (H)speaks.

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, (I)“and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

38 And,

“But my righteous[a] one will live by faith.(A)
    And I take no pleasure
    in the one who shrinks back.”[b](B)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(C) and assurance about what we do not see.(D) This is what the ancients were commended for.(E)

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(F) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(G) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(H) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(I)

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[c](J) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(K) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
