26 For (A)if we go on sinning deliberately (B)after receiving the knowledge of the truth, (C)there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 (D)but a fearful expectation of judgment, and (E)a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 (F)Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy (G)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one (H)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned (I)the blood of the covenant (J)by which he was sanctified, and has (K)outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, (L)“Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, (M)“The Lord will judge his people.” 31 (N)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But recall the former days when, after (O)you were enlightened, you endured (P)a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being (Q)publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For (R)you had compassion on those in prison, and (S)you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had (T)a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has (U)a great reward. 36 For (V)you have need of endurance, so that (W)when you have done the will of God you may (X)receive what is promised. 37 For,

(Y)“Yet a little while,
    and (Z)the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 (AA)but my righteous one shall live by faith,
    and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning(A) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,(B) no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire(C) that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(D) 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God(E) underfoot,(F) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant(G) that sanctified them,(H) and who has insulted the Spirit(I) of grace?(J) 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[a](K) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[b](L) 31 It is a dreadful thing(M) to fall into the hands(N) of the living God.(O)

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light,(P) when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.(Q) 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution;(R) at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.(S) 34 You suffered along with those in prison(T) and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.(U) 35 So do not throw away your confidence;(V) it will be richly rewarded.

36 You need to persevere(W) so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.(X) 37 For,

“In just a little while,
    he who is coming(Y) will come
    and will not delay.”[c](Z)

38 And,

“But my righteous[d] one will live by faith.(AA)
    And I take no pleasure
    in the one who shrinks back.”[e](AB)

39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
