26 Such a high priest(A) truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,(B) exalted above the heavens.(C) 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices(D) day after day, first for his own sins,(E) and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all(F) when he offered himself.(G) 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness;(H) but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,(I) who has been made perfect(J) forever.

The High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest,(K) who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,(L) and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle(M) set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Every high priest(N) is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices,(O) and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.(P) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law.(Q) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy(R) and shadow(S) of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned(T) when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a](U) But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant(V) of which he is mediator(W) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.(X) But God found fault with the people and said[b]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant(Y)
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors(Z)
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant(AA) I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.(AB)
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.(AC)
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,(AD)
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.(AE)[c](AF)

13 By calling this covenant “new,”(AG) he has made the first one obsolete;(AH) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle

Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.(AI) A tabernacle(AJ) was set up. In its first room were the lampstand(AK) and the table(AL) with its consecrated bread;(AM) this was called the Holy Place.(AN) Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,(AO) which had the golden altar of incense(AP) and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.(AQ) This ark contained the gold jar of manna,(AR) Aaron’s staff that had budded,(AS) and the stone tablets of the covenant.(AT) Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory,(AU) overshadowing the atonement cover.(AV) But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly(AW) into the outer room to carry on their ministry. But only the high priest entered(AX) the inner room,(AY) and that only once a year,(AZ) and never without blood,(BA) which he offered for himself(BB) and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.(BC) The Holy Spirit was showing(BD) by this that the way(BE) into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. This is an illustration(BF) for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered(BG) were not able to clear the conscience(BH) of the worshiper. 10 They are only a matter of food(BI) and drink(BJ) and various ceremonial washings(BK)—external regulations(BL) applying until the time of the new order.

The Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ came as high priest(BM) of the good things that are now already here,[d](BN) he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle(BO) that is not made with human hands,(BP) that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;(BQ) but he entered the Most Holy Place(BR) once for all(BS) by his own blood,(BT) thus obtaining[e] eternal redemption.
