Concluding Exhortations

13 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.^(A)

²⁰ Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister^(A) is a liar.^(B) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,^(C) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.^{(D) 21} And he has given us this command:^(E) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.^(F)

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

5 Everyone who believes^(G) that Jesus is the Christ^(H) is born of God,^(I) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.^(J)

Suffering for Doing Good

⁸ Finally, all of you, be like-minded,^(A) be sympathetic, love one another,^(B) be compassionate and humble.^(C)

²² Now that you have purified^(A) yourselves by obeying^(B) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,^(C) from the heart.^[a]

⁷ and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.^(A)

⁵ And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning.^(A) I ask that we love one another. ⁶ And this is love:^(B) that we walk in obedience to his commands.^(C) As you have heard from the beginning,^(D) his command is that you walk in love.

¹⁷ Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,^(A) fear God, honor the emperor.^(B)

⁹ Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[a](A) is still in the darkness.^{(B) 10} Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[b] lives in the light,^(C) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^(D)

²⁴ And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,^(A)
