¹¹ And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,^(A) was enabled to bear children^(B) because she^[a] considered him faithful^(C) who had made the promise.

²⁰ Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened^(A) in his faith and gave glory to God,^{(B) 21} being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.^(C)

²³ Let us hold unswervingly to the hope^(A) we profess,^(B) for he who promised is faithful.^(C)

¹¹ Abraham and Sarah were already very old,^(A) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.^{(B) 12} So Sarah laughed^(C) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord^(D) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’^{(E) 14} Is anything too hard for the Lord?^(F) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,^(G) and Sarah will have a son.”^(H)

The Birth of Isaac

21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah^(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.^{(B) 2} Sarah became pregnant and bore a son^(C) to Abraham in his old age,^(D) at the very time God had promised him.^(E)

³⁶ Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child^(A) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.

⁵ For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God^(A) used to adorn themselves.^(B) They submitted themselves to their own husbands, ⁶ like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord.^(C) You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

¹⁷ Abraham fell facedown;^(A) he laughed^(B) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?^(C) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”^{(D) 18} And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael^(E) might live under your blessing!”^(F)

¹⁹ Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,^(G) and you will call him Isaac.^[a](H) I will establish my covenant with him^(I) as an everlasting covenant^(J) for his descendants after him.
