Genesis 47:28-50:26 New American Standard Bible (NASB)28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the [a]length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years. 29 When [b]the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, place now your hand under my thigh and deal with me in kindness and [c]faithfulness. Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 He said, “Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed. Israel’s Last Days48 Now it came about after these things that [d]Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When [e]it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel [f]collected his strength and sat [g]up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “[h]God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your [i]descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your offspring that [j]have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the [k]names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, [l]to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).” 8 When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” 10 Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then [m]Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 Israel said to Joseph, “I never [n]expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your [o]children as well.” 12 Then Joseph [p]took them from his knees, and bowed with his face to the ground. 13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, [q]crossing his hands, [r]although Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 He blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, 17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his [v]descendants shall become a [w]multitude of nations.” 20 He blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying, Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 I give you one [x]portion more than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.” Israel’s Prophecy concerning His Sons49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what will befall you in the [y]days to come. 2 “Gather together and hear, O sons of Jacob; 3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn; 5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers; 8 “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; 13 “Zebulun will dwell at the seashore; 14 “Issachar is [an]a strong donkey, 16 “Dan shall judge his people, 21 “Naphtali is a doe let loose, 22 “Joseph is a fruitful [au]bough, 27 “Benjamin is a [bc]ravenous wolf; 28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them [bd]when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one [be]with the blessing appropriate to him. 29 Then he charged them and said to them, “I am about to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a [bf]burial site. 31 There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah, there they buried Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people. The Death of Israel50 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Now forty days were [bg]required for [bh]it, for [bi]such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. 4 When the days of [bj]mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak [bk]to Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.” 7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the [bl]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and [bm]sorrowful lamentation; and he [bn]observed seven days mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [bo]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [bp]grievous [bq]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [br]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. Burial at Machpelah12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a [bs]burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father. 15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” 16 So they [bt]sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father charged before he died, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about [bu]this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21 So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke [bv]kindly to them. Death of Joseph22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely [bw]take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He [bx]promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely [by]take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and [bz]he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.
