Genesis 49:3-5 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)

¶ Reuben mine eldest son, thou art my [a]might, and the beginning of my strength, [b]the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

Thou wast light as water: thou shalt not be excellent, because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed: [c]then diddest thou defile my bed, thy dignity is gone.

¶ Simeon and Levi, brethren in evil, [d]the instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.

Genesis 49:3-5 New International Version (NIV)

“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling in honor, excelling in power.
Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their swords[a] are weapons of violence.
