²⁵ Adam and his wife were both naked,^(A) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

3 Now the serpent^(B) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?^(C)”

⁸ Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking^(A) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid^(B) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(C)

¹⁰ He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid^(D) because I was naked;^(E) so I hid.”

¹¹ And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?^(F) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?^(G)”

¹² The man said, “The woman you put here with me^(H)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

¹³ Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,^(I) and I ate.”

⁸ If we claim to be without sin,^(A) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.^{(B) 9} If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins^(C) and purify us from all unrighteousness.^(D)

⁶ You have condemned and murdered^(A) the innocent one,^(B) who was not opposing you.

Final Charge to Timothy

¹¹ But you, man of God,^(A) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,^(B) faith, love,^(C) endurance and gentleness. ¹² Fight the good fight^(D) of the faith. Take hold of^(E) the eternal life^(F) to which you were called when you made your good confession^(G) in the presence of many witnesses.

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run^(A) with perseverance^(B) the race marked out for us, ² fixing our eyes on Jesus,^(C) the pioneer^(D) and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross,^(E) scorning its shame,^(F) and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.^{(G) 3} Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary^(H) and lose heart.
