And the Lord God formed man of the (A)dust of the ground, and (B)breathed into his (C)nostrils the breath of life; and (D)man became a living being.

Life in God’s Garden

The Lord God planted (E)a garden (F)eastward in (G)Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made (H)every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (I)The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and (J)evil.

10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts (K)the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good. (L)Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is (M)Hiddekel;[a] it is the one which goes toward the east of [b]Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 Then the Lord God took [c]the man and put him in the garden of Eden to [d]tend and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (N)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it (O)you[e] shall surely (P)die.”

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; (Q)I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 (R)Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and (S)brought them to [f]Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 And the Lord God caused a (T)deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He [g]made into a woman, (U)and He (V)brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now (W)bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called [h]Woman,
Because she was (X)taken out of [i]Man.”

24 (Y)Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and (Z)be[j] joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 (AA)And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not (AB)ashamed.

The Temptation and Fall of Man(AC)

Now (AD)the serpent was (AE)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the (AF)fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you (AG)touch it, lest you die.’ ”

(AH)Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman (AI)saw that the tree was good for food, that it was [k]pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit (AJ)and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, (AK)and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [l]coverings.

And they heard (AL)the [m]sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the [n]cool of the day, and Adam and his wife (AM)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, (AN)and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, (AO)“The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, (AP)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (AQ)you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between (AR)your seed and (AS)her Seed;
(AT)He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

16 To the woman He said:

“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
(AU)In pain you shall bring forth children;
(AV)Your desire shall be [o]for your husband,
And he shall (AW)rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, (AX)“Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree (AY)of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

(AZ)“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
(BA)In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall [p]bring forth for you,
And (BB)you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 (BC)In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
(BD)For dust you are,
And (BE)to dust you shall return.”

20 And Adam called his wife’s name (BF)Eve,[q] because she was the mother of all living.

21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden (BG)to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (BH)He drove out the man; and He placed (BI)cherubim (BJ)at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of (BK)life.

Then the Lord God formed(A) a man[a](B) from the dust(C) of the ground(D) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(E) of life,(F) and the man became a living being.(G)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(H) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(I) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(J) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(K)

10 A river(L) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(M) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(N) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[b](O) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[c] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(P) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(Q)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(R) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(S) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(T) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(U)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(V)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(W) and all the birds in the sky.(X) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(Y) each living creature,(Z) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[d] no suitable helper(AA) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AB) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[e] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[f](AC) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(AD)
she shall be called(AE) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(AF)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AG) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AH)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AI) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

Now the serpent(AJ) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(AK)

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(AL) but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(AM)

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(AN) “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(AO) knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(AP) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(AQ) who was with her, and he ate it.(AR) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(AS) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(AT)

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(AU) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(AV) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(AW)

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(AX) because I was naked;(AY) so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(AZ) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(BA)

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(BB)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(BC) and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed(BD) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust(BE)
    all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[g](BF) and hers;(BG)
he will crush[h] your head,(BH)
    and you will strike his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
    with painful labor you will give birth to children.(BI)
Your desire will be for your husband,
    and he will rule over you.(BJ)

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(BK)

“Cursed(BL) is the ground(BM) because of you;
    through painful toil(BN) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.(BO)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(BP) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.(BQ)
19 By the sweat of your brow(BR)
    you will eat your food(BS)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”(BT)

20 Adam[i] named his wife Eve,[j](BU) because she would become the mother of all the living.

21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.(BV) 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,(BW) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life(BX) and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden(BY) to work the ground(BZ) from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[k] of the Garden of Eden(CA) cherubim(CB) and a flaming sword(CC) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.(CD)
