¹³ Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years^(A) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved^(B) and mistreated there. ¹⁴ But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out^(C) with great possessions.^{(D) 15} You, however, will go to your ancestors^(E) in peace and be buried at a good old age.^{(F) 16} In the fourth generation^(G) your descendants will come back here,^(H) for the sin of the Amorites^(I) has not yet reached its full measure.”

¹⁷ When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch^(J) appeared and passed between the pieces.^{(K) 18} On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram^(L) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,^(M) from the Wadi^[a] of Egypt^(N) to the great river, the Euphrates^(O)— ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites,^(P) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, ²⁰ Hittites,^(Q) Perizzites,^(R) Rephaites,^{(S) 21} Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”^(T)

⁴ I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.^(A) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.^(B)”

²⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.^(A) But God will surely come to your aid^(B) and take you up out of this land to the land^(C) he promised on oath to Abraham,^(D) Isaac^(E) and Jacob.”^{(F) 25} And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath^(G) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones^(H) up from this place.”^(I)
