²⁸ So when the Midianite^(A) merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern^(B) and sold^(C) him for twenty shekels^[a] of silver^(D) to the Ishmaelites,^(E) who took him to Egypt.^(F)

⁹ “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,^(A) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.^(B) But God was with him^(C)

⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”^(A) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!^{(B) 5} And now, do not be distressed^(C) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,^(D) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.^(E)

² She bore him Zimran,^(A) Jokshan, Medan, Midian,^(B) Ishbak and Shuah.^(C)

¹⁵ and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.^(A)

6 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord,^(A) and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.^{(B) 2} Because the power of Midian was so oppressive,^(C) the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves^(D) and strongholds.^{(E) 3} Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites^(F) and other eastern peoples^(G) invaded the country.

³⁶ Meanwhile, the Midianites^[a](A) sold Joseph^(B) in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.^(C)

²⁵ As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites^(A) coming from Gilead.^(B) Their camels were loaded with spices, balm^(C) and myrrh,^(D) and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.^(E)
