²⁸ Then ^(A)Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and ^(B)sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels^[a] of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

⁹ “And the patriarchs, ^(A)jealous of Joseph, ^(B)sold him into Egypt; but ^(C)God was with him

⁴ So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, ^(A)whom you sold into Egypt. ⁵ And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, ^(B)for God sent me before you to preserve life.

^2 (A)She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

¹⁵ and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they ^(A)paid him ^(B)thirty pieces of silver.

Midian Oppresses Israel

6 ^(A)The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of ^(B)Midian seven years. ² And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and ^(C)the caves and the strongholds. ³ For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and ^(D)the Amalekites and ^(E)the people of the East would come up against them.

³⁶ Meanwhile ^(A)the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, ^(B)the captain of the guard.

²⁵ Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a ^(A)caravan of ^(B)Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing ^(C)gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.
