¹² Put the marriage present and gift as high as you like, and I will give whatever you ask me; only give me the young woman to be my wife.”^(A)

¹⁶ “When a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife.^{(A) 17} But if her father refuses to give her to him, he shall pay an amount equal to the bride-price for virgins.

¹⁷ They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.”^(A)

² So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barley and a measure of wine.^[a](A)

¹⁴ Then David sent messengers to Saul’s son Ishbaal,^[a] saying, “Give me my wife Michal, to whom I became engaged at the price of one hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”^(A)

²⁵ Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no marriage present except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged on the king’s enemies.’ ” Now Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.^{(A) 26} When his servants told David these words, David was well pleased to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired,^{(B) 27} David rose and went, along with his men, and killed one hundred^[a] of the Philistines, and David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Saul gave him his daughter Michal as a wife.^(C)

²⁸ “If a man meets a virgin who is not engaged and seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered,^{(A) 29} the man who lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the young woman’s father, and she shall become his wife. Because he violated her, he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.

⁴¹ These twenty years I have been in your house; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.^(A)

¹⁸ Jacob loved Rachel, so he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”^(A)

⁵³ And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold and garments and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments.^(A)
