¹⁶ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!”^(A)

¹⁵ The commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.^(A)

⁵ Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”^(A)

¹³ But the Lord of hosts, him you shall regard as holy; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.^(A)

⁴ Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!”^[a] and he said, “Here I am!”^{(A) 5} and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. ⁶ The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” ⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.^(B)
