A Son Promised to Abraham and Sarah

18 The Lord appeared to Abraham^[a] by the oaks^[b] of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day.^(A)

¹³ Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks^[a] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.^(A)

¹⁸ So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks^[a] of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.^(A)

³ And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and he blessed me^(A)

² The Lord appeared to Isaac^[a] and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; settle in the land that I shall show you.^(A)

² And Stephen replied:

“Brothers^[a] and fathers, listen to me. The God of glory appeared to our ancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,^(A)

⁷ That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I should give you.”^(A)

²² And when he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

The Sign of the Covenant

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty;^[a] walk before me, and be blameless.^{(A) 2} And I will make my covenant between me and you and will make you exceedingly numerous.”^{(B) 3} Then Abram fell on his face, and God said to him,

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”^(A)
