⁴ Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.^(A)”

¹⁶ I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.^(A) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;^(B) kings of peoples will come from her.”

²⁸ Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.^(A)

²¹ And the Lord sent an angel,^(A) who annihilated all the fighting men and the commanders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons, his own flesh and blood, cut him down with the sword.^(B)

¹² But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[a] will be reckoned.^(A)

¹² I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you.

¹¹ David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son,^(A) my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.^(B)
