So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. Chariots with teams of horses also went up with him; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the [a]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (A)mourned there with a very great and [b]sorrowful lamentation; and he [c]observed seven days of mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [d]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [e]grievous [f]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [g]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials(A) accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court(B) and all the dignitaries of Egypt— besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household.(C) Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.(D) Chariots(E) and horsemen[a] also went up with him. It was a very large company.

10 When they reached the threshing floor(F) of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly;(G) and there Joseph observed a seven-day period(H) of mourning(I) for his father.(J) 11 When the Canaanites(K) who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.”(L) That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.[b]
