5 The sons of Reuben^(A) the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s marriage bed,^(B) his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph^(C) son of Israel;^(D) so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright,^(E)

¹² I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,^(A) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.^(B)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

¹³ “You have done a foolish thing,^(C)” Samuel said. “You have not kept^(D) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.^{(E) 14} But now your kingdom^(F) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart^(G) and appointed^(H) him ruler^(I) of his people, because you have not kept^(J) the Lord’s command.”
