³⁰ Nevertheless what does ^(A)the Scripture say? ^(B)“Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for ^(C)the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”

¹⁰ Therefore she said to Abraham, ^(A)“Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.” ¹¹ And the matter was very ^[a]displeasing in Abraham’s sight ^(B)because of his son.

¹² But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for ^(C)in Isaac your seed shall be called.

³⁵ And ^(A)a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.

¹⁵ For ^(A)you did not receive the spirit of bondage again ^(B)to fear, but you received the ^(C)Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ^(D)“Abba,^[a] Father.” ^16 (E)The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, ¹⁷ and if children, then ^(F)heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, ^(G)if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, ^(A)“The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

²² But the Scripture has confined ^(A)all under sin, ^(B)that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

⁸ And ^(A)the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ^(B)“In you all the nations shall be blessed.”

⁷ What then? ^(A)Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were ^(B)blinded. ⁸ Just as it is written:

¹¹ I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But ^(F)through their ^[a]fall, to provoke them to ^(G)jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles.

² God has not cast away His people whom ^(A)He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying,
