10 Now when the builders had (A)laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, [a]the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord (B)according to the [b]directions of King David of Israel. 11 And (C)they sang, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, saying, “(D)For He is good, for His favor is upon Israel forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout of joy when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, (E)the old men who had seen the first [c]temple, wept with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping of the people, because the people were shouting with a loud shout, and the sound was heard far away.

Temple Foundation Completed

10 When the builders had laid the foundation of the Lord’s temple, the priests, dressed in their robes and holding trumpets, and the Levites descended from Asaph,(A) holding cymbals, took their positions to praise the Lord, as King David of Israel had instructed.(B) 11 They sang with praise and thanksgiving to the Lord: “For He is good; His faithful love to Israel endures forever.”(C) Then all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord because the foundation of the Lord’s house had been laid.(D)

12 But many of the older priests, Levites, and family leaders, who had seen the first temple, wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this house,(E) but many others shouted joyfully. 13 The people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shouting from that of the[a] weeping,(F) because the people were shouting so loudly. And the sound was heard far away.
