² Shecaniah son of Jehiel, of the descendants of Elam, addressed Ezra, saying, “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.^(A)

²⁷ Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”^(A)

² For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons. Thus the holy seed has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands, and in this faithlessness the officials and leaders have led the way.”^(A)

¹² Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say:

¹² Take care not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, or it will become a snare among you.^(A)

⁷ but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.^{(A) 8} If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.^(B)

⁹ But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

²⁹ After them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his own house. After him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs.
