A Prophecy Against Egypt
29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month,[a] the Lord’s message came to me: 2 “Son of man, turn toward[b] Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all Egypt. 3 Tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“‘Look, I am against[c] you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
the great monster[d] lying in the midst of its waterways,
who has said, “My Nile is my own, I made it for myself.”[e]
4 I will put hooks in your jaws
and stick the fish of your waterways to your scales.
I will haul you up from the midst of your waterways,
and all the fish of your waterways will stick to your scales.
5 I will leave you in the wilderness,
you and all the fish of your waterways;
you will fall in the open field and will not be gathered up or collected.[f]
I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the skies.
6 Then all those living in Egypt will know that I am the Lord
because they were a reed staff[g] for the house of Israel;
7 when they grasped you with their hand,[h] you broke and tore[i] their shoulders,
and when they leaned on you, you splintered and caused their legs to be unsteady.[j]
8 “‘Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will kill[k] every person and every animal. 9 The land of Egypt will become a desolate ruin. Then they will know that I am the Lord.
“‘Because he said, “The Nile is mine and I made it,” 10 I am against[l] you and your waterways. I will turn the land of Egypt into an utter desolate ruin from Migdol[m] to Syene,[n] as far as the border with Ethiopia. 11 No human foot will pass through it, and no animal’s foot will pass through it; it will be uninhabited for forty years. 12 I will turn the land of Egypt into a desolation in the midst of desolate lands; for forty years her cities will lie desolate in the midst of ruined cities. I will scatter Egypt among the nations and disperse them among foreign countries.
13 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years[o] I will gather Egypt from the peoples where they were scattered. 14 I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and will bring them back[p] to the land of Pathros, to the land of their origin; there they will be an insignificant kingdom. 15 It will be the most insignificant of the kingdoms; it will never again exalt itself over the nations. I will make them so small that they will not rule over the nations. 16 It will never again be Israel’s source of confidence, but a reminder of how they sinned by turning to Egypt for help.[q] Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.’”
17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month,[r] the Lord’s message came to me: 18 “Son of man, King Nebuchadrezzar[s] of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre.[t] Every head was rubbed bald and every shoulder rubbed bare; yet he and his army received no wages from Tyre for the work he carried out against it. 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to give the land of Egypt to King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon. He will carry off her wealth, capture her loot, and seize her plunder; it will be his army’s wages. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt as his compensation for attacking Tyre,[u] because they did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 21 On that day I will make Israel powerful,[v] and I will give you the right to be heard[w] among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

It also refers to large creatures that inhabit the sea (Gen 1:21; Ps 148:7). In several passages it is associated with the sea or with the multiheaded sea monster Leviathan (Job 7:12; Ps 74:13; Isa 27:1; 51:9). Because of the Egyptian setting of this prophecy and the reference to the creature’s scales (v. 4), many understand a crocodile to be the referent here (e.g., NCV “a great crocodile”; TEV “you monster crocodile”; CEV “a giant crocodile”).

- Ezekiel 29:7 tn Heb “you caused to stand for them all their hips.” An emendation that switches two letters but is supported by the LXX yields the reading: “you caused all their hips to shake.” See L. The LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate translate as though the Hebrew had the vocalization וְהֹשַׁבְתִּי (vehoshavti, “I will cause to inhabit”), a Hiphil from יָשַׁב (yashav “to dwell”).
- Ezekiel 29:16 tn Heb “reminding of iniquity when they turned after them.”

3 Così parla il Signore, Dio: “Eccomi contro di te, faraone, re d’Egitto, gran coccodrillo, che stai disteso in mezzo ai tuoi fiumi e dici: ‘Il fiume è mio e sono io che l’ho fatto!’
4 Io metterò dei ganci nelle tue mascelle, farò in modo che i pesci dei tuoi fiumi si attacchino alle tue scaglie e ti tirerò fuori dai tuoi fiumi, con tutti i pesci dei tuoi fiumi attaccati alle tue scaglie.

11 Non vi passerà piede d’uomo, non vi passerà piede di bestia, né sarà più abitato per quarant’anni.

18 «Figlio d’uomo, Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ha fatto fare al suo esercito un duro servizio contro Tiro; ogni testa n’è divenuta calva, ogni spalla scorticata; né egli né il suo esercito hanno ricavato da Tiro nessun vantaggio dal servizio che egli ha fatto contro di essa.
19 Perciò così parla il Signore, Dio: “Ecco, io do a Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, il paese d’Egitto; egli ne porterà via le ricchezze, lo spoglierà delle sue spoglie e si impadronirà di quanto c’è da saccheggiare; questo sarà il salario per il suo esercito.
20 Come retribuzione del servizio che egli ha fatto contro Tiro, io gli do il paese d’Egitto, poiché hanno lavorato per me”, dice il Signore, Dio.

2 Menschensohn, richte dein Angesicht gegen den Pharao, den König von Ägypten, und weissage gegen ihn und gegen ganz Ägypten!
3 Rede und sprich: So spricht Gott, der Herr: Siehe, ich komme über dich, Pharao, du König von Ägypten, du großes Seeungeheuer, das mitten in seinen Strömen[a] liegt und spricht: »Mein Strom gehört mir, und ich habe ihn mir gemacht!«
4 So will ich dir denn Haken in deine Kinnbacken legen und die Fische in deinen Strömen an deine Schuppen hängen; und ich will dich herausziehen aus deinen Strömen samt allen Fischen in deinen Strömen, die an deinen Schuppen hängen.
5 Und ich will dich samt allen Fischen in deinen Strömen in die Wüste schleudern, dass du auf dem freien Feld liegen bleibst. Man wird dich weder auflesen noch einsammeln, sondern ich will dich den Tieren des Feldes und den Vögeln des Himmels zum Fraß geben!
6 Dann sollen alle Einwohner Ägyptens erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin, weil sie für das Haus Israel [wie] ein Rohrstab[b] gewesen sind:
7 Wenn sie dich in die Hand nahmen, so knicktest du ein und durchstachst ihnen die ganze Schulter; und wenn sie sich auf dich lehnten, so zerbrachst du und lähmtest ihre Hüften.
8 Darum, so spricht Gott, der Herr: Siehe, ich will das Schwert über dich bringen und Menschen und Vieh in dir ausrotten.
9 Und das Land Ägypten soll zur Wüste und Einöde werden; und sie sollen erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin. Weil [der Pharao][c] sagt: »Der Strom gehört mir, und ich habe ihn gemacht!«,
10 darum, siehe, komme ich über dich und über deine Ströme, und ich will das Land Ägypten zu Trümmerstätten machen, zu einer schrecklichen Einöde, von Migdol bis nach Syene[d], bis an die Grenze von Kusch.[e]
11 Kein Fuß eines Menschen soll es durchwandern, auch kein Fuß eines Tieres soll es durchwandern, und es soll 40 Jahre lang unbewohnt bleiben.
12 Und ich will das Land Ägypten zu einer schrecklichen Wüste machen inmitten verwüsteter Länder, und seine Städte sollen unter zerstörten Städten 40 Jahre lang verwüstet sein. Aber die Ägypter will ich unter die Heidenvölker zerstreuen und in die Länder versprengen.
13 Dennoch spricht Gott, der Herr, so: Wenn die 40 Jahre vollendet sind, will ich die Ägypter aus den Völkern, unter die sie zerstreut worden sind, wieder zusammenbringen;
14 und ich will das Geschick der Ägypter wenden; ja, in das Land Patros,[f] in das Land ihres Ursprungs, will ich sie zurückbringen, dass sie dort ein geringes[g] Königreich sein sollen.
15 Ja, es soll geringer sein als andere Königreiche, sodass es sich künftig nicht über die Völker erheben wird. Denn ich will sie so vermindern, dass sie nicht mehr über die Völker herrschen werden.
16 Sie werden auch für das Haus Israel künftig keine Zuflucht mehr sein, die ihre Missetat in Erinnerung bringt, wenn sie sich zu ihnen wenden. Und sie sollen erkennen, dass ich Gott, der Herr, bin.

20 Als Sold für seine Arbeit, die er verrichtet hat, will ich ihm das Land Ägypten geben, weil sie für mich gearbeitet haben, spricht Gott, der Herr.
21 Zu jener Zeit will ich dem Haus Israel ein Horn hervorsprossen lassen, und dir werde ich es gewähren, den Mund aufzutun in ihrer Mitte; und sie sollen erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin.

te hatalmas szörnyeteg[b],
aki a Nílus ágai közt heverészel,
s azt mondod: »Enyém a folyó,
én alkottam magamnak!«
4 Horgokat akasztok állkapcsodba,

17 Le premier jour du premier mois de la vingt-septième année[h], l’Eternel m’adressa la parole en ces termes :
18 Fils d’homme, Nabuchodonosor, le roi de Babylone, a soumis son armée à un effort immense pour lutter contre Tyr[i]. Les têtes des soldats en sont devenues chauves et toutes les épaules ont été écorchées[j] mais il n’a retiré aucun profit de Tyr, ni pour lui, ni pour son armée, pour cette opération qu’il a menée contre elle. 19 C’est pourquoi le Seigneur, l’Eternel, dit ceci : Je vais donner l’Egypte à Nabuchodonosor, le roi de Babylone. Il en emportera les nombreuses richesses, il y prendra un butin et la pillera complètement. L’Egypte servira de salaire à ses troupes. 20 Pour le rétribuer du travail contre Tyr, je lui livre l’Egypte, parce que ses troupes ont œuvré pour moi. C’est là ce que déclare le Seigneur, l’Eternel. 21 En ce jour-là, je ferai croître la force d’Israël. Quant à toi, tu pourras parler librement parmi eux[k], et ils reconnaîtront que je suis l’Eternel.

Certains comprennent ce propos énigmatique comme annonçant la reconnaissance par le peuple de l’accomplissement de ses prophéties.
