Mission to Rebellious Israel

He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet(A) and I will speak with you.” As He spoke to me, the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet,(B) and I listened to the One who was speaking to me. He said to me: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to[a] the rebellious pagans[b] who have rebelled against Me. The Israelites and their ancestors have transgressed against Me to this day.(C) The children are obstinate[c] and hardhearted.(D) I am sending you to them, and you must say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says.’ Whether they listen or refuse to listen(E)—for they are a rebellious house—they will know that a prophet has been among them.(F)

“But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words,(G) though briers and thorns are beside you and you live among scorpions.(H) Don’t be afraid of their words or be discouraged by the look on their faces, for they are a rebellious house. But speak My words to them whether they listen or refuse to listen,(I) for they are rebellious.

“And you, son of man, listen to what I tell you: Do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”(J) So I looked and saw a hand reaching out to me,(K) and there was a written scroll in it.(L) 10 When He unrolled it before me, it was written on the front and back; words of lamentation, mourning, and woe were written on it.

He said to me: “Son of man, eat what you find here. Eat this scroll,(M) then go and speak to the house of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and He fed me the scroll. “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat[d] and fill your stomach with this scroll I am giving you.” So I ate it,(N) and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.(O)

Then He said to me: “Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak My words to them. For you are not being sent to a people of unintelligible speech or difficult language but to the house of Israel. You are not being sent to many peoples of unintelligible speech or difficult language, whose words you cannot understand. No doubt, if I sent you to them, they would listen to you.(P) But the house of Israel will not want to listen to you because they do not want to listen to Me.(Q) For the whole house of Israel is hardheaded and hardhearted. Look, I have made your face as hard as their faces and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.(R) I have made your forehead like a diamond, harder than flint. Don’t be afraid of them or discouraged by the look on their faces, even though they are a rebellious house.”

10 Next He said to me: “Son of man, listen carefully to all My words that I speak to you and take them to heart. 11 Go to your people, the exiles, and speak to them. Tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says,’ whether they listen or refuse to listen.”(S)

12 The Spirit then lifted me up,(T) and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me—praise the glory of the Lord in His place!— 13 with the[e] sound of the living creatures’ wings brushing against each other(U) and the sound of the wheels beside them,(V) a great rumbling sound. 14 So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away. I left in bitterness and in an angry spirit, and the Lord’s hand was on me powerfully.(W) 15 I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were living by the Chebar Canal, and I sat there among them stunned for seven days.(X)

Ezekiel’s Call to Be a Prophet

He said to me, “Son of man,[a](A) stand(B) up on your feet and I will speak to you.(C) As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me(D) to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.

He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day.(E) The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn.(F) Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’(G) And whether they listen or fail to listen(H)—for they are a rebellious people(I)—they will know that a prophet has been among them.(J) And you, son of man, do not be afraid(K) of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns(L) are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(M) You must speak(N) my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.(O) But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel(P) like that rebellious people;(Q) open your mouth and eat(R) what I give you.”

Then I looked, and I saw a hand(S) stretched out to me. In it was a scroll,(T) 10 which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.(U)

And he said to me, “Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.

Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate(V) it, and it tasted as sweet as honey(W) in my mouth.

He then said to me: “Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them.(X) You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and strange language,(Y) but to the people of Israel— not to many peoples of obscure speech and strange language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you.(Z) But the people of Israel are not willing to listen(AA) to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.(AB) But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are.(AC) I will make your forehead(AD) like the hardest stone, harder than flint.(AE) Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.(AF)

10 And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart(AG) all the words I speak to you. 11 Go(AH) now to your people in exile and speak to them. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says,’(AI) whether they listen or fail to listen.(AJ)

12 Then the Spirit lifted me up,(AK) and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing.[b] 13 It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures(AL) brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound.(AM) 14 The Spirit(AN) then lifted me up(AO) and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord(AP) on me. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River.(AQ) And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days(AR)—deeply distressed.
