²⁸ Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God because I sent them into exile among the nations and then gathered them into their own land. I will leave none of them behind,^(A)

²² The house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day forward.

¹² On that day the Lord will thresh from the channel of the Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you will be gathered one by one, O people of Israel.^(A)

Israel’s Rejection Is Not Final

11 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.^{(A) 2} God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?^{(B) 3} “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” ⁴ But what is the divine reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”^{(C) 5} So, too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. ⁶ But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.^[a](D)

⁷ What then? Israel has not achieved what it was pursuing. The elect have achieved it, but the rest were hardened,^(E)

⁶ It is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all those descended from Israel are Israelites,^{(A) 7} and not all of Abraham’s children are his descendants, but “it is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for you.”^{(B) 8} This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants.

³⁰ They shall know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, says the Lord God.

²⁰ I will take you for my wife in faithfulness, and you shall know the Lord.^(A)

⁸ Remember the word that you commanded Moses your servant, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples,^{(A) 9} but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are under the farthest skies, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I have chosen to establish my name.’^{(B) 10} They are your servants and your people whom you redeemed by your great power and your strong hand.^(C)

³ then the Lord your God will return you from your captivity and have compassion on you, gathering you again from all the peoples among whom the Lord your God has scattered you.^{(A) 4} Even if you are exiled to the ends of the world,^[a] from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will take you back.^(B)
