⁴⁴ “Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: ‘Like mother, like daughter!’

² “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying:

³ “As I live,” says the Lord God, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel.

9 When these things were done, the leaders came to me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not ^(A)separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, ^(B)with respect to the abominations of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

¹³ As the proverb of the ancients says, ^(A)‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand shall not be against you.

⁴⁵ You are your mother’s daughter, ^[a]loathing husband and children; and you are the ^(A)sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; ^(B)your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

³ and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: “Your ^[a]birth ^(A)and your nativity are from the land of Canaan; ^(B)your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

⁹ But they paid no attention, and Manasseh ^(A)seduced them to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the children of Israel.

¹⁵ And they ^(A)rejected His statutes ^(B)and His covenant that He had made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He had testified against them; they followed ^(C)idols, ^(D)became idolaters, and went after the nations who were all around them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them that they should ^(E)not do like them.
