14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
(A)they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    (B)they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
(C)all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    (D)and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”

Lying Prophets

13 Then I said: “Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets (A)say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14 And the Lord said to me: “The (B)prophets are prophesying lies in my name. (C)I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, (D)worthless divination, and (E)the deceit of their own minds. 15 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although (F)I did not send them, and who say, (G)‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: (H)By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, (I)with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

17 “You shall say to them this word:
(J)‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
    and let them not cease,
for the virgin (K)daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound,
    (L)with a very grievous blow.

18 For, (A)speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely (B)escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them (C)freedom, (D)but they themselves are slaves[a] of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.

Footnotes

  1. 2 Peter 2:19 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface

14 Again, (A)though I say to the wicked, (B)‘You shall surely die,’ yet (C)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (D)restores the pledge, (E)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (F)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (G)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.

11 (A)My eyes are spent with weeping;
    (B)my stomach churns;
(C)my bile is poured out to the ground
    (D)because of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
(E)because infants and babies (F)faint
    in the streets of the city.

12 They cry to their mothers,
    (G)“Where is bread and wine?”
(H)as they faint like a wounded man
    in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
    on their mothers' bosom.

13 What can I say for you, (I)to what compare you,
    O daughter of Jerusalem?
(J)What can I liken to you, that I may comfort you,
    O virgin daughter of Zion?
(K)For your ruin is vast as the sea;
    who can heal you?

14 (L)Your prophets have seen for you
    false and deceptive visions;
(M)they have not exposed your iniquity
    to (N)restore your fortunes,
(O)but have seen for you (P)oracles
    that are false and misleading.

16 Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: (D)Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, (E)‘Behold, the vessels of the Lord's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,’ (F)for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 17 (G)Do not listen to them; (H)serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city (I)become a desolation?
