⁶ And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord ^(A)God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in ^(B)goodness and ^(C)truth,

^7 (A)keeping mercy for thousands, ^(B)forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, ^(C)by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

^18 (A)‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, ^(B)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’

¹⁸ You show ^(A)lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, ^(B)the Mighty God, whose name is ^(C)the Lord of hosts.

² So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I ^(A)fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a ^(B)gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.

¹¹ Indeed ^(A)we count them blessed who ^(B)endure. You have heard of ^(C)the perseverance of Job and seen ^(D)the end intended by the Lord—that ^(E)the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
