Moses then wrote(A) down everything the Lord had said.

He got up early the next morning and built an altar(B) at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars(C) representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings(D) and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings(E) to the Lord. Moses(F) took half of the blood(G) and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed(H) against the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant(I) and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”(J)

Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people(K) and said, “This is the blood of the covenant(L) that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders(M) of Israel went up 10 and saw(N) the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli,(O) as bright blue as the sky.(P) 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw(Q) God, and they ate and drank.(R)

12 He had a dream(A) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(B) 13 There above it[a] stood the Lord,(C) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(D) I will give you and your descendants the land(E) on which you are lying.(F) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(G) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(H) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[b](I) 15 I am with you(J) and will watch over you(K) wherever you go,(L) and I will bring you back to this land.(M) I will not leave you(N) until I have done what I have promised you.(O)(P)

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(Q) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(R) This is none other than the house of God;(S) this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(T) and set it up as a pillar(U) and poured oil on top of it.(V) 19 He called that place Bethel,[c](W) though the city used to be called Luz.(X)

20 Then Jacob made a vow,(Y) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(Z) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(AA) 21 so that I return safely(AB) to my father’s household,(AC) then the Lord[d] will be my God(AD) 22 and[e] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(AE) will be God’s house,(AF) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(AG)
