¹² Be careful not to make a treaty^(A) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare^(B) among you.

³² Do not make a covenant^(A) with them or with their gods. ³³ Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare^(B) to you.”

¹² “But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them^(A) and associate with them,^{(B) 13} then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out^(C) these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares^(D) and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes,^(E) until you perish from this good land,^(F) which the Lord your God has given you.

² and when the Lord your God has delivered^(A) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(B) them totally.^[a](C) Make no treaty^(D) with them, and show them no mercy.^(E)

² and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,^(A) but you shall break down their altars.^(B)’ Yet you have disobeyed^(C) me. Why have you done this? ³ And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;^(D) they will become traps^(E) for you, and their gods will become snares^(F) to you.’”

¹⁶ You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.^(A) Do not look on them with pity^(B) and do not serve their gods,^(C) for that will be a snare^(D) to you.

²⁷ Gideon made the gold into an ephod,^(A) which he placed in Ophrah,^(B) his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare^(C) to Gideon and his family.^(D)
