16 For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy,(A) gladness and honor.(B) 17 In every province and in every city to which the edict of the king came, there was joy(C) and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear(D) of the Jews had seized them.(E)

11 For the grace(A) of God has appeared(B) that offers salvation to all people.(C) 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions,(D) and to live self-controlled,(E) upright and godly lives(F) in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing(G) of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,(H) 14 who gave himself for us(I) to redeem us from all wickedness(J) and to purify(K) for himself a people that are his very own,(L) eager to do what is good.(M)

15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

Saved in Order to Do Good

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities,(N) to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,(O) to slander no one,(P) to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

At one time(Q) we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness(R) and love of God our Savior(S) appeared,(T) he saved us,(U) not because of righteous things we had done,(V) but because of his mercy.(W) He saved us through the washing(X) of rebirth and renewal(Y) by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us(Z) generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace,(AA) we might become heirs(AB) having the hope(AC) of eternal life.(AD) This is a trustworthy saying.(AE) And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.(AF) These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

But avoid(AG) foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels(AH) about the law,(AI) because these are unprofitable and useless.(AJ) 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.(AK) 11 You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

19 After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude(A) in heaven shouting:

“Hallelujah!(B)
Salvation(C) and glory and power(D) belong to our God,
for true and just are his judgments.(E)
He has condemned the great prostitute(F)
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”(G)

And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!(H)
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”(I)

The twenty-four elders(J) and the four living creatures(K) fell down(L) and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”(M)

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,
    all you his servants,(N)
you who fear him,
    both great and small!”(O)

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude,(P) like the roar of rushing waters(Q) and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

“Hallelujah!(R)
For our Lord God Almighty(S) reigns.(T)
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!(U)
For the wedding of the Lamb(V) has come,
and his bride(W) has made herself ready.
Fine linen,(X) bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts(Y) of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me,(Z) “Write this:(AA) Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!”(AB) And he added, “These are the true words of God.”(AC)

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.(AD) But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!(AE) For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”(AF)
