30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,(A) with whom you were sealed(B) for the day of redemption.(C) 31 Get rid of(D) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.(E) 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,(F) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.(G) Follow God’s example,(H) therefore, as dearly loved children(I) and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us(J) and gave himself up for us(K) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(L)

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality,(M) or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,(N) because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk(O) or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.(P) For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater(Q)—has any inheritance(R) in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a](S) Let no one deceive you(T) with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath(U) comes on those who are disobedient.(V) Therefore do not be partners with them.

For you were once(W) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light(X) (for the fruit(Y) of the light consists in all goodness,(Z) righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.(AA) 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,(AB) but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light(AC) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,(AD)
    rise from the dead,(AE)
    and Christ will shine on you.”(AF)

15 Be very careful, then, how you live(AG)—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity,(AH) because the days are evil.(AI) 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.(AJ) 18 Do not get drunk on wine,(AK) which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,(AL) 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.(AM) Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks(AN) to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Instructions for Christian Households(AO)

21 Submit to one another(AP) out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands(AQ) as you do to the Lord.(AR) 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church,(AS) his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands(AT) in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives,(AU) just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her(AV) 26 to make her holy,(AW) cleansing[b] her by the washing(AX) with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself(AY) as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.(AZ) 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives(BA) as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body.(BB) 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c](BC) 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife(BD) as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.(BE) “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”[d](BF)

Fathers,[e] do not exasperate your children;(BG) instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.(BH)

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect(BI) and fear, and with sincerity of heart,(BJ) just as you would obey Christ.(BK) Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ,(BL) doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,(BM) because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do,(BN) whether they are slave or free.

And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours(BO) is in heaven, and there is no favoritism(BP) with him.

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord(BQ) and in his mighty power.(BR) 11 Put on the full armor of God,(BS) so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,(BT) but against the rulers, against the authorities,(BU) against the powers(BV) of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.(BW) 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God,(BX) so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,(BY) with the breastplate of righteousness in place,(BZ) 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.(CA) 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,(CB) with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.(CC) 17 Take the helmet of salvation(CD) and the sword of the Spirit,(CE) which is the word of God.(CF)

18 And pray in the Spirit(CG) on all occasions(CH) with all kinds of prayers and requests.(CI) With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying(CJ) for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me,(CK) that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly(CL) make known the mystery(CM) of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador(CN) in chains.(CO) Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Final Greetings

21 Tychicus,(CP) the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are,(CQ) and that he may encourage you.(CR)

23 Peace(CS) to the brothers and sisters,[f] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[g]

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:

22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.

23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.
